Name: Sarah Ali
Recipient Year: 2019
Description: Sarah Ali is an MFA candidate and Juniper Fellow at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she also teaches English Composition. She graduated magna cum laude from UC Santa Cruz with majors in both Literature and Politics, and was named a 21st Century Leonardo da Vinci Scholar. Her poems can be found in homonym and are forthcoming in an anthology from Red Hen Press. Much of her work explores how women claim agency of their bodies, beliefs, and environments. On a larger scale, Sarah is interested in the production of alternatives: how narratives morph over time, how a word in one language can have multiple connotations in another, and how intertextuality can be a way to respond to or even reinterpret canonical works.
