Description: Sara Swetzoff is a PhD candidate in the African Studies department at Howard University. She previously obtained an M.A. in Islamic Studies at the University of London, and currently works as a policy fellow at the Islamic Society of North America. Sara’s research focuses on grassroots solidarity in the Red Sea region, with emphasis on how Ethiopian migrants, Syrian refugees, and civil society activists from across the Arab world and Horn of Africa are increasingly building a shared vision for social justice that embraces religious and ethnic pluralism. Sara aspires to teach international affairs at the college level; she hopes to give students a dynamic and nuanced understanding of global political economy that can inform a diversity of career trajectories.UPDATE2020: Sara is a 2020-2021 Fulbright recipient, headed to host country. During the 4th year of her Ph.D. program she participated in two initial research scoping trips in March and June of 2019.
