    Description: Aliyah decided she wanted to be a journalist when she was 11-years-old, when she realized there was a decided lack of Muslim representation in the media shortly after 9/11. At De Anza College, Aliyah started off as a reporter before quickly becoming Deputy Editor and then Managing Editor of the paper. As a student at U.C. Berkeley she wrote for the Daily Californian as a General Assignment reporter on a wide range of subjects. Aliyah is a an outspoken proponent of women’s rights, civil rights, justice in minority communities, and in particular advocating for a shift to fair trade products to abolish modern day slavery.UPDATEAliyah Mohammed is a full-time community news reporter with Bay Area News Group. She graduated from the UC Berkeley in 2013 as a media studies and English double major. Aliyah is the Associate Managing Editor at VentureBeat
