Description: Aleena Haris is a senior at the University of Washington studying Political Science and Human Rights. She currently works at the US Attorney's Office in the Western District of Washington as a part of the civil division. Over the weekend, Aleena spends her time teaching at an Islamic school where she aims to inspire young Muslim Americans, and young women in particular, to feel confident in their identities. She brings this vision into her academics, where her writing has been centered around women’s rights, including the rights of women in prison and the effects of the dowry system on women’s rights in India. As a fellow for the Center for American Politics and Public Policy, she will be continuing research on the impacts of cultural and legal systems on women's rights.In the future, Aleena hopes to attend law school and eventually practice international human rights law to protect and advocate for women’s legal rights.
