Name: David Washburn
Recipient Year: 2018
Description: Washburn has collaborated with American Muslim storytellers for over a decade. His 2013 documentary, An American Mosque, tells the story of a hate-crime that destroyed the Islamic Center of Yuba City and the interfaith healing that followed the arson. The film significantly shifted the public narrative around this largely unrecognized hate-crime in California. It screened on public television nationwide for three years and was acquired by Al Jazeera. Washburn’s film work has been honored with awards from the Muslim Public Affairs Council, Council on American Islamic Relations, Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, and Islamic Scholarship Fund, among others.
